Frequently Asked Questions About Pediatric Dentistry

Frequently Asked Questions About Pediatric Dentistry

Here at the Kids Dentistry Center, we get asked many questions about pediatric dentistry by parents and caregivers keen to look after their child’s oral health to the best of their abilities. We’ve listed a few of the most common questions about pediatric dentistry we hear at our dental office below. But of course, if you ever have any questions then we definitely encourage you to talk to our friendly dental team as we are here to help you and your child.

When Should My Child First See a Pediatric Dentistry Specialist?

We recommend children see a dentist as soon as age 1 (Learn about:What to Expect at Your Kid’s First Dental Visit at Age One) so we can begin a regular routine of professional dental care and can help you with any queries you may have about their home care.

Why Should My Child See a Pediatric Dentist?

Children have different oral health needs to adults and this is where seeing a pediatric dentist can be invaluable. Our pediatric dentists such as Dr. Marina Krepkh have first qualified as general dentists before going on to complete several years’ additional training to specialize in pediatric dentistry. This additional training enables them to provide the very best level of care for your child right from infanthood up until their late teens.

When Do I Need to Begin Brushing My Kid’s Teeth?

You should begin cleaning their teeth as soon as they erupt, using a very soft baby toothbrush and appropriate toothpaste. You can even begin oral care before the first tooth emerges by gently cleaning your baby’s gums after each feeding with a clean washcloth or damp piece of gauze.

Do Cavities in Baby Teeth Need to Be Filled?

We will fill any cavities we find in your child’s baby teeth and it is important to do so as otherwise the infection could spread, affecting the pulp of the tooth. Without treatment it’s quite possible for a baby tooth to become so badly infected that it needs removing. We obviously don’t want this to happen, not least because tooth decay is very painful.

What Should I Do If My Child Has Toothache?

It can be a good idea to try gently flossing around the tooth as sometimes pain can be caused by impacted food in between teeth that is just enough to shift them out of position. If this doesn’t help, please contact us for advice as you may need to bring your child into see us. We always make every attempt to see a child who is in pain as soon as possible.

Will My Child Need to Wear Braces?

Not every child will need orthodontic treatment (Read also:Will My Child Need Orthodontic Treatment?), but we do keep an eye on the development of their teeth and jaws and if necessary we can recommend an early evaluation around age 6 or seven. In pediatric dentistry early orthodontic treatment can help correct problems caused by finger or thumb sucking and may reduce or even eliminate the need for treatment later on. If your child does need to wear braces, then we will discuss all possible options and treatment with you both. Our orthodontist can provide a complete range of treatments using the very latest braces.
