Fluoride Varnish and Why It’s so Important for Kids Teeth
The American Academy of Pediatrics is recommending that children’s teeth should be varnished with fluoride. It suggests that once teeth emerge, fluoride varnish should be applied to all children’s teeth every 3 to 6 months. This recommendation is the only change the committee made for this year and is certainly not a new suggestion.
Why Fluoride Is Important for Children’s Teeth
Fluoride can sometimes be a controversial subject as it carries both risks and benefits for kids’ teeth. Fluoride is a naturally occurring element and its benefits for dental health were discovered decades ago. It was found that kids who were drinking naturally fluoridated drinking water had fewer cavities which led to the introduction of fluoridated public water supplies to help protect people against tooth decay. Fluoride is particularly important for growing teeth as it is integrated into tooth enamel which is the hard outer coating that protects teeth. However fluoride is useful even when teeth are formed, working with saliva to help protect tooth enamel from sugars and plaque bacteria.

You’ll find the pediatric dentists at the Kids Dentistry Center are more than willing to talk to parents and caregivers about the benefits of fluoride and how its best used to protect children’s teeth. We can discuss just when your child should begin using fluoride toothpaste, how much need to be used and the need for any other additional fluoride supplements. Fluoride is hugely beneficial in reducing cavities and even though tooth decay is fully preventable, dental caries is still the most chronic childhood disease in the country. According to a report issued last year, 59% of 12 to 19-year-olds have at least one cavity. Although it’s perfectly easy to fill teeth, untreated tooth infections can become serious and may lead to a child missing many hours of school not to mention suffering considerable discomfort and pain.
How Fluoride Varnish Works
Fluoride varnish is an incredibly simple way to protect a child’s teeth. All that will happen is Dr. Marina Krepkh or another of our pediatric dentists will make sure your child’s teeth are thoroughly cleaned. Next, the teeth are painted with the fluoride varnish and that’s it! There is no need for any anaesthetic, no discomfort and no downtime afterwards as your child will be able to eat and drink normally. All they need do is to leave the varnish on their teeth for a few hours or even overnight before brushing it off. This allows the fluoride varnish plenty of time to penetrate the teeth providing maximum benefit.
Other Fluoride Treatments
In addition to fluoride varnish treatment, there are other ways of applying fluoride to teeth. We may suggest your child uses fluoride mouthwash, or fluoride can be applied using mouth trays that are filled with fluoride foam or gel and which are simply left in the mouth for a few minutes during their visit to our dental office. We can also prescribe fluoride supplements if necessary.
All of fluoride treatments are based on your child’s level of risk for tooth decay and will only be recommended after a careful evaluation to make sure the treatment is exactly right for their needs and will offer them maximum protection.
