We Are Trained to Assess Children and Adults with Special Needs
Pediatric dentists are trained to assess children and adults with special needs, as these patients may require specific dental plans that are specially adapted for them. We can offer customized healthcare for children or adults who are affected by mental, psychological or physical disabilities and who may require additional assistance during dental treatment or during other dental care appointments. If you have a special needs child or are a caregiver to an adult with special needs then we can offer respectful, caring and gentle dental care.
Our dentists take the time to get to know children and adults with special needs, so they can learn how best to help them feel more comfortable in our dental office.
Everyone is unique, and some people are more sensitive to meeting new people, to touch or to a change in routine or environment. These changes can be minimized through ensuring a person with special needs is treated by the same dentist or other members of dental staff, and in the same room at each visit.
There are many things to take into account when treating children or adults with special needs, for example their current health status or medication as this can affect their diet and could increase the risk of oral diseases. Certain children or adults may need to follow special diets, and our dentist will want to assess these foods to see whether or not they could affect their dental health.
Some children or adults with special needs are less able than others to look after their teeth and gums, and this can increase their susceptibility towards developing gum disease and cavities. If it’s difficult for them to brush their teeth, or for you to look after their oral hygiene at home then we can help through showing you specific techniques appropriate to their needs.
If dental treatment is required, nitrous oxide conscious sedation can help keep special needs patients more comfortable and relaxed.
